Bryan Dallas is more than a musician; he's a living testament to a life well-lived and a versatile artist. Born in San Francisco, CA, he grew up in the heart of the Bay Area's rock 'n' roll scene, setting the stage for his musical journey. But Bryan's story is anything but ordinary. His life is a patchwork of unique encounters and experiences:

At 18, Bryan danced backstage with Drew Barrymore and Karen O at The Beastie Boys concert.

He had an impromptu show with ZZ Top at age 23.

In pro per won against city police for a traffic ticket that turned into wrongful arrest.
Was in a hardcore band when EMO was a trend.

Became the first (and possibly only) crew member to check Chrissie Hynde’s microphone at The Fillmore SF.

The Livesays

The Livesays are an accomplished five-piece Heartland/Americana band fronted by the band’s namesake critically acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist Billy Livesay, who spent 12 years performing, recording and touring with E-Streeter Clarence Clemons' band "Temple of Soul."

During his 12-year tenure with the beloved “Big Man,” Billy recorded and released "Live in Asbury Park" Volumes I & II at The Stone Pony, the second album which features Bruce Springsteen. Billy has shared the stage with so many industry giants, his resume reads like a "Who's Who of Rock n' Roll Hall of Famers." Drummer Steve Rheingold, was formerly the beat keeper with the legendary Wayne Cochran. The Livesays' lineup is rounded out with Jorge Laplume on bass, Victor "Cuqui" Berrios on Hammond B-3 organ, and Tim Murphy on piano, all of whom have impressive resumes of their own. Cuqui, who grew up in New York City, offers a touch of the Big Apple to the band with his Hammond B3 and impassioned vocals.

Tim brings his ear for harmony and his unique Elton John style piano. Jorge hails from Havana, Cuba; with his Latin roots coupled with a steady diet of the rock groups The Who and Free, he delivers a bass sound that is both funky and thunderous. The combination of these five seasoned pros, with their versatile backgrounds, incomparable harmonies, energy level, and undeniable chemistry, create real magic on stage together and put on one heck of a dynamic live performance.

The Livesays have created five full length albums that are both memorable and moving with stories ranging from adolescence to adulthood, from battling addiction to conquering depression, from finding love to losing love ... with lyrics that will surely touch your heart and quench your soul.

Blue Moon Marquee Earned 4 Nominations At Maple Blues Awards

The coveted Roots Blues duo of Vancouver-based and Alberta-born Blue Moon Marquee, are again seeing their name up in lights - this time on the face of the Toronto Blues Society’s Maple Blues Awards where they’ve scored four nominations -  Entertainer of the Year, Acoustic Act of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Recording/Producer of the Year - ahead of the ceremony on January 30, 2023.

The excitement surrounding the nominations is palpable for the globetrotting touring artists who refute genre boxes and create songs that swing, jump, groove and move inside their souls. A.W. Cardinal (vocals/guitar) and Jasmine Colette a.k.a. Badlands Jass (vocals/bass/drums) have played for a vast gamut of crowds at jazz clubs, Lindy Hop dance halls, folk venues, blues haunts, hospitals, prisons, markets, motorcycle joints, dive bars, and prestigious festival stages. The pair have crisscrossed Europe 5 times.

“To say A.W. and Jasmine are old souls is an understatement to say the least,” says co-producer and legendary guitarist Duke Robillard on the Scream, Holler & Howl liner notes. “They are poised for worldwide recognition in an amazing genre-bending ride through American blues and folk, gypsy jazz, Native American themes, jump blues, swing and more.”

The duo has garnered big time praise and adoration from their legions of fans and are now being recognized for their efforts and contributions to the blues community.

It’s undeniable the energy, and commitment Blue Moon Marquee have to their infectious sound and on-stage presence. The band released their fifth studio album Scream, Holler & Howl this past fall on their Blue Moon Marquee record label and hit #1 – twice - on the Roots Music Report’s Canadian Chart and has now spent over 20 weeks on the tally. The release also hit Top 10 on the Earshot Canadian Campus Radio Chart, hitting #1 on their Roots/Folk/Blues Chart this year. The totality of the record was another accomplishment in the tenure of Blue Moon Marquee, earning praise and positive reviews from fans and critics.

The band refuses to shy away from an equally enchanting visual component to their sensational music. From their stage show to their music videos and artwork, Blue Moon Marquee are storytellers at their core, and the pair seek to elevate the yarn they spin through a variety of mediums. Jasmine Colette not only commands the upright bass, but also brings the rhythm with her feet on a custom foot drum kit, all while singing in her signature honey-dipped tones. A.W. Cardinal’s distinctive and soulful vocals barrel out like a raging bull, while his guitar crackles with the swinging energy of jazz-tinged blues.

Tom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues Make History with National Canadian Museum

Vancouver-based band Tom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues, formed in 1978, are finally history, in the most literal sense. The National Canadian Museum of History has just completed an acquisition of Powder Blues artifacts that will become a part of the CMH permanent collection.

“We are incredibly honored that the National Canadian Museum of History has chosen to preserve our legacy. It is our hope the display will convey some of the joy, passion and energy that we have shared with and received from our great audiences over the past 44 years,” says Lavin. “It’s satisfying to know that these items will be protected and shared for years to come. I could not have asked for a more perfect home than this great and respected museum in Gatineau.”

Items include a rare, transparent blue vinyl, LP of the band’s first release in 1979, Powder Blues ‘UNCUT’, the ‘million-mile guitar case’, Lavin’s custom blue D’Angelico New Yorker archtop guitar, the original manuscript for Tom Lavin’s travelogue of their 1990 tour of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, numerous historical photos, and a Canadian Recording Industry Association Double-Platinum award.  Much of the collection has never or rarely been seen by the public.

The Canadian Museum of History is a national museum of anthropology, Canadian history, cultural studies, and ethnology in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The purpose of the museum is to promote the heritage of Canada, as well as support related research.

For over four decades Powder Blues has been Canada’s leading blues band. The mix of swing, blues, jazz, rock & roll and R&B has an appeal so wide that people from seven to seventy swing side by side at Powder Blues shows. Over the years the band has toured non-stop through Canada, the United States and overseas, spreading feel-good music that makes folks dance and shout.

Powder Blues debut album, ‘Uncut’, was ignored by major labels who said there was ‘no market for the blues’. Undiscouraged, the band sold it off stage and sent it to radio stations whose switchboards lit up with calls asking, ‘who’s that?’ After selling 30,000 copies in a few weeks, the same record labels competed to distribute this ‘non-commercial’ product. To date Powder Blues have sold over a million records worldwide.

Band highlights include winning Canada’s Juno, headlining the world-famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, winning the Blues Foundation Award in Memphis, Tennessee and touring the US and Europe with legends like Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, James Brown, Albert Collins, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Leader, Tom Lavin wrote many of the band’s best-known songs including ‘Doin’ It Right’ (‘On the Wrong Side of Town’) and ‘Boppin With the Blues’. Born in Chicago where he worked with local bands and blues legends, Tom moved to Vancouver gigging the nightclub scene. This led to work as studio musician, song writer, band leader, record producer and film composer.

Tom has won BCMIA awards for ‘Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter and Producer of the Year’, a JUNO award for ‘Best New Band’ and the American W.C. Handy award. He has over a dozen gold, and platinum records for Powder Blues, Prism, April Wine, Long John Baldry, Amos Garrett, and many others.

2023 is the band’s 45th Anniversary. Their more than dozen CD titles and DVD continue to sell world-wide making Tom Lavin & the Legendary Powder Blues one of Canada’s longest-standing musical ambassadors.

Toronto-Based Blues Rocker EMILY MAC Finds Her Strength on Fiery, Sassy New Single “Whiskey Like Me”

Watering oneself down to suit the fickle tastes of someone else is never a good idea, though we’ve all likely done it before. Toronto blues-rocker Emily Mac embraces the fact that she’s a strong shot of whiskey rather than a weak cup of tea on her scorching new single “Whiskey Like Me” – available now.

A fiery rock anthem with sassy vocals and dirty, bluesy guitar, “Whiskey Like Me” hits right where it hurts when Mac sings, “I’m a top-shelf queen/ And you keep staring at me/ But you can’t drink me tonight/ I ain’t your trophy wife.” Like all the best songs, it’s inspired by a true story. “When I was writing ‘Whiskey Like Me,’ I was coming out of a bad relationship and I didn’t understand why I was so heartbroken over a guy who treated me like I was worthless,” Mac divulges. “I made a joke to my co-writer about how I was this strong, whiskey-drinking woman who could drink this guy under the table while he preferred milk, and out of this conversation, ‘Whiskey Like Me’ was born.”

Co-written with Jay Stolar (Demi Lovato, Daryl Hall & John Oates), “Whiskey Like Me” features Ben Healey on guitar, Stacey Shopsowitz on bass, and Robert Sibony on drums. It was engineered by Theresa Gemma and produced by Dajaun Martineau (Moist, Big Sugar).

“I love that popular quote, “I’d rather be someone’s shot of whiskey than everyone’s cup of tea,’” Mac says. “As someone who has a problem with being a people pleaser, this was a very important lesson for me to learn. I hope that when people hear ‘Whiskey Like Me,’ they’ll embrace their inner badass and walk away from anyone who doesn’t value them.”

Emily Mac’s sultry vocals are something to be both savoured and enjoyed in abundance. Before she could legally order a drink, she was singing in cover bands in bars, honing her craft in real time in front of an audience. Over the course of her career, Emily has performed at numerous festivals such as Canadian Music Week, Indie Week, TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Beaches International Jazz Festival, and Niagara Wine Festival. Additionally, Emily has become an asset of empowerment to the Toronto music community through her support of other female artists with her Queens Of Rock ’n’ Roll showcase series, which has brought like-minded indie artists together both online and in person.

Toronto's Legendary GROSSMAN'S TAVERN Announces The Five And Ten and Wayling James Win Annual Amy Louie / Grossman's Music Scholarship

The Five And Ten and Wayling James are the winners of the annual Amy Louie / Grossman's Music Scholarship, which returned to Toronto’s legendary Grossman’s Tavern after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Created in memory of the late Amy Louie — a member of the family that has owned Grossman’s Tavern since 1975 — the ALGMS is an artist development bursary that provides two musicians or bands from the Greater Toronto Area $2000 and $1000 to help with career development.

Winner of the $2000 was The Five And Tens, an instrumentals band built around the Vidal brothers, Ray (guitar), Anthony (keyboards) and Nick (drums), alongside Sean Jackson (bass).  The $1000 runner-up prize was awarded to Wayling James, a group comprised of Tim Wayling (vocals, guitar), Darrell James (vocals, bass), Chris Bender (drums), Rob Pelletier (guitar) and Larry Gould (guitar).

Performers at the Sept. 27 event were The Swingin Blackjacks, Caution Jam, Frankie Foo, The Happy Pals, Action Sound Band, Quail, Hedifine & Roderman, Camp Combo, Mike Nagoda & The Spectrum Blues Band and both scholarship recipients.

The fundraiser segment of the event raised $1005.

Artists submitted applications to participate. The successful candidates were chosen a panel of judges that included members of the Louie family, music industry professionals, and individuals with long-standing connections to Grossman’s Tavern.

Previous recipients of the scholarship include The Big Butter and Egg Men, Mike Nagoda, The Swingin’ Blackjacks, Dan McKinnon, Bad Luck Woman & Her Misfortunes, Chloe Watkinson & Park Eddy, Jerome Godboo, and The Responsables.

As one of the longest-running live music venues and a stalwart within Toronto’s vibrant and dynamic music scene, Grossman’s has long been considered an incubator for an impressive roster of local artists who got their start inside the Tavern, including the late Jeff Healey, the Downchild Blues Band, Rough Trade, and more.

Mud Bay

Mud Bay is rocking on with their new song "Feel," out now as the lead single from their sixth album Best Laid Plans.

Addressing the preoccupied individual who "can't think, can't touch, can't feel," "Feel" is a call to embrace the anti-cerebral, sensual playground of live rock and roll. "FEEL! FEEL! FEEL!" Mark Branscombe- along with the stellar vocals of Aidan Farrell, daughter of drummer Murphy Farrell- implores the listener in the song's rollicking conclusion. It is both a plea and a rallying cry, encompassing all of Mud Bay's hard-earned wisdom in one spirited single.

Mud Bay has been electrifying audiences with their high-intensity brand of original Roots & Blues music and truckload of character since 1978. They've accumulated some well-deserved monikers in their time, including "The Band That Won't Go Away," "Saturday Night Entertainment, Any Day of the Week," and "One of Canadian Music's Best Kept Secrets." All well fitting, as in their over four decades playing together Mud Bay has forged a genre-agnostic identity, letting their musical intuition guide them, embracing new sounds and styles along the way. Best Laid Plans showcases the versatility of the band's songwriting and their wide-ranging influences—Blues, Country, Cajun, Rock, Soul, and more.

Harmonica maestro Mud Bay Slim, or the 'King of the Mud Bay Delta Blues' delivers the goods as always with "My Disposition," "When The Blues Come To Town," and "Last Slim Dime." Guitarist Randall T. Carpenter also showcases his blues roots with "Best Laid Plans" and "Hard Times," but also ventures into outspoken social commentary with "Greed" and "Talk Is Cheap," and makes a heartfelt plea for understanding in troubled times with "Love and Forgiveness." But there's much more than blues here-- Drummer Murphy Farrell brings uptown R&B into the mix with "Rock In My Shoe" and "Feel," and detours into gloriously unrestrained rock with "Pound Rocks." Finally, Guitarist Mark Branscombe kicks in some horn-driven soul with "Soul In The City," a taste of twang with "Down To The Bottom," and some epic rock with "Struggle." Nailing down the groove on all these tracks is bassist Dennis Ingvaldson, an integral part of the Mud Bay sound.

Unconventional. Uncompromising. That's Mud Bay. Always another trick up their sleeves.

Paul Roland

“Paul Roland writes nice melodies and has a very particular personality, but he is too intellectual for me!" (Frank Zappa, 1988)

“Roland’s songs are like short stories set to music.” (Greg Lake)

Since the appearance of his first album ‘The Werewolf of London’ in 1980 (a John Peel favourite and a regular featured album at the legendary Bat Cave) Roland has written and recorded 20 albums including ‘A Cabinet of Curiosities’ which ‘Rolling Stone’ named “one of the best albums you’ve probably never heard”, the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired ‘Reanimator’ and ‘Bates Motel’ with songs written for surviving members of the Velvet Underground.

For four decades Roland has been spinning twisted tales of Victorian villains, eccentric Edwardian inventors and the supernatural against a backdrop of gothic-psych-baroque pop, earning him the title “the male Kate Bush” (a comparison attributed to former label mate Robyn Hitchcock). His highly literate lyrics, often macabre themes and strong melodic gift has attracted an increasingly large and loyal cult following while his proudly independent ethos has ensured he has remained a cherished niche artist.

‘Candyman’ is the lead track on a 5 song EP exclusive to Bandcamp. The first two tracks (‘Candyman’ and ‘Lilith’) are previews from a forthcoming album ‘Morbid Beauty’ to be released by UK indie label Blue Matter. All 5 songs showcase Roland’s unique and highly distinctive take on psychpop, gothrock and leftfield fantasy (the tender but skewed ‘Song For Terry Pratchett’ being just one example)
